Lankans remember Pope Francis’ love for the marginalised

Late pontiff consoled civil war victims, stressed reconciliation, and called for justice for Easter Sunday bombings

(UCAN) Lankan Christians and people of other faiths have paid homage to Pope Francis, recalling his 2015 visit to the island nation and his compassion and support for the poor and marginalised communities.

Catholics flocked to churches across the country with many carrying posters, banners and white flags in memory of Pope Francis on April 22 and 23, following his death at the age of 88.

Half-mast white and Vatican flags have been hoisted across churches.

Many drivers hosted small white flags on their vehicles, newspapers published articles, and electronic media aired special programmes to honour Francis.

Nilushan Sebastian, a three-wheeler driver from Katana, said the three-wheeler drivers' association decided to hoist white flags to pay respect to the late pontiff.

Sebastian said that after he heard about Pope's passing, he flocked to St. Sebastian Church like hundreds of Catholics and prayed together for his eternal rest.

People in the Church reflected on Francis' visit in 2015 and recalled fond memories.
