MINISTRY OF DEFENCE RELEASING LAND TO BUILD AN INITIAL 1,300
PROGRESS has been made towards the building of thousands of homes at Chetwynd Barracks in Chilwell.
The site, currently home to a number of Army and Royal Navy units, has been earmarked for about 4,000 homes, together with land in neighbouring Toton. However, the project was delayed when the planned closure of the barracks was put back by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) from 2024 to 2026.
But now the MoD has announced it has partnered with government agency Homes England to partially release land around Chetwynd Barracks for 1,300 homes. The decision is part of a Government scheme to build more than 100,000 homes on surplus defence land in the coming years.
Defence Secretary John Healey said: "This work will unlock thousands of new homes on surplus defence land, including in North Yorkshire, Nottingham and Cambridgeshire - developments promised for years by the last government, but never delivered."
