Looking purely at AQI may downplay just how bad Delhi's air really is

With an air quality index (AQI) reading of 494, Delhi matched its previous record of the worst air quality on any day since 2018 -- the first year after the number of air monitoring stations in the city came close to their current level of 39.
While the number is alarmingly high, an HT analysis shows that the official 4pm bulletin of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) underestimates the worst excesses of air pollution, and that the air quality is worse in absolute terms than the AQI reading -- which is capped for each station at 500 -- suggests.
