Burning Ship's Debris Found Off Kerala Coast

A cargo container and a lifeboat, of Singapore-flagged MV Wan Hai 503 which caught fire last week off the coast of Kannur, washed up on the coast of the Alappuzha district on Monday, officials familiar with the matter said.

While the container was found at Kakkazhom near Alappuzha town, the orange-coloured lifeboat with markings of "Wan Hai 503 Singapore" on it was found on the coast near Paravur early on Monday morning.

This is the first time that cargo from the Singapore-flagged vessel has reached the coast.

The locals tethered the lifeboat safely, officials said. The cargo container, with similar markings on it, is believed to be empty as its contents likely spilled into the sea, they added.

Alappuzha district collector Alex Varghese visited both areas and asked the public to maintain a safe distance from items that drift ashore from the ship.
