Police to look at criminal charges in the infected blood scandal’

POLICE will look "very carefully" into whether criminal charges should be brought in the infected blood scandal, a Cabinet minister said today.
Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride stressed that justice for the victims was "robustly" following up on the findings of a damning report by the Infected Blood Inquiry into the biggest treatment disaster in NHS history. It condemned successive governments and the NHS for a cover-up and other failures, concluding that the scandal should have largely been avoided.
Mr Stride gave an "assurance" that steps being taken would include looking at whether there should be criminal action against those responsible for the blunders which saw more than 3,000 people dying after getting infections including HIV and hepatitis from contaminated blood products and transfusions.
