Disappointing BP update sees heavy selling of oil giant's shares

HEAVY selling of BP shares held back the FTSE 100 index today after an update by the oil giant caused City analysts to rip up forecasts for results later this month.
The 3.5% reverse followed BP's second quarter guidance of unchanged oil and gas production, alongside negative revisions to refining margins.
BP added that results on 30 July will include one-off items worth up to $2 billion, including from a review of its Gelsenkirchen refinery in Germany.
Today's fall of 16.6p to 458p means BP shares have fallen by about 15% from their 2024 high point set in mid-April.
