TEN KATE RACING: YAMAHA WORLD SUPERSPORT R9

Remember when the supersport class was a simple deal? Thousands of Japanese 599cc inline-fours and a couple of £100k Ducati 748s which would blow up but look amazing while doing so (j/k 748 fans!!).

RATED RUBBER: ROADTEC 02

We love a control tyre, but choosing the right one for a test of this nature is not always easy... a ride covering 1000 miles, suiting different-sized bikes, on a trip covering everything from motorways to goat trails - and perhaps the odd bit of precipitation, too.

MV AGUSTA SUPERVELOCE 1000 AGO

With the financial collapse of parent firm Pierer Mobility at the turn of the year, MV Agusta finds itself operating as an independent outfit once more, separate from KTM and the other firms in that group. It's issued an update from boss Luca Martin, detailing how it's setting up new logistics, parts supply, and a new dealer network, with the UK an important part of that. The firm also said it's working on new bikes and new engines, which it certainly needs to do.

ROUNDING off

So, three bikes, three opinions, one winner? Nah, that would have been way too easy. In reality, each of us concluded that our bike was the best, and only begrudgingly gave praise to the rival machines out of sight and under our breaths. After 1000 miles in the saddle, on such a diverse route, we'd probably just come to accept that our bikes were great in some areas and less good in others. But the worst thing of all would have been rendering a rival's pick better than our own... so we didn’t.

WORLD SUPERBIKES SLAYER: TOPRAK'S Bullet

It’s not every day you get to knock around with the World Superbike champ, let alone head out for a spin on his title defending M 1000 RR, but that’s how Rennie passed the time at Cremona recently, getting under the skin of BMW’s Bullet before trying it out for size...

The Frame Game

A motorcycle without a frame is up there with a house without a roof... you kind of need 'em. Over the years we've seen hundreds of differing shapes, styles and stiffnesses, made from a multitude of different materials. Which one's best? Well, that's a very good question. Here's why...

Honda totally rewrote the Fireblade's direction when it launched the RCV-inspired CBR1000RR in 2004. It was, and still is, a very capable and pleasurable litre bike.

THE WILD CHILD

Having waxed lyrical about Suzuki's game-changing GSX-R1000 K5, it's only right to look at the rivals it was up against. As it happens, just the year before, the major players from Japan decided to unleash a fresh raft of firepower onto the market, with the ZX-10R stealing the limelight for being the new wild child of the scene.

YAMAHA TRACER 7 AND 7 GT

With 2025 updates for the MT-07 and Ténéré appearing late last year, the only real surprise with this release is that it's taken so long. Actually, there's one more surprise about the 2025 Tracer 700 and GT, but we'll come to that in a minute (can you feel the suspense building?).

BEST OF BOTH

In many ways, the 2004-2006 Yamaha YZF-R1 is a bit of a contradiction. Why? When it was unveiled in 2004, this generation of R1 was claimed to be the first motorcycle to boast a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio, with Yamaha boldly stating it weighed 172kg and produced 172bhp.

THE HEAVYWEIGHT: BMW K1600GT

Given that the ‘sports’ element of sports touring might err too much on the side of cramped rearsets and bars that put more stress on your wrists than the most extreme Only Fans sites, I opted for a bias towards the comfort side of things for our blast northwards, with a big bruiser Beemer as my steed for the trip.
