CONQUER THE EPIC
Bicycling South Africa
|March / April 2026
RIDING THE WORLD'S TOUGHEST MOUNTAIN-BIKE STAGE RACE THIS YEAR? HERE'S THE BEST WISDOM FROM SOME OF THE MOST EXPERIENCED RIDERS IN THE GAME.
ANNIKA LANGVAD, SIX-TIME CHAMPION
• "I love the racing at the Epic. It's such a tactical game, and there's always a high level. Plus you get to ride through some of the most beautiful scenery. And every year is a different challenge."
• "I've had so many great moments with each partner, and the feeling of the partnership growing and coming together in the race is unique. The experience is so intense, and you grow a bond and an understanding with each other. It's only a week, but you would never have that experience in such a short space of time in real life, with anyone."
• "A lot of people say you need luck. But I see it more as avoiding bad luck. You have to try to be smart, because you can't plan everything. You will have issues out there, and how you react is critical."
• "It often depends on the situation; but there's never a lot to gain by taking big risks."
OLIVER MUNNIK, 15 FINISHES
• "My number-one piece of advice is to first find the person to ride the Epic with, rather than entering the Epic and then finding the person. Partnership is the most important. My partners have been exceptional, and very intentional. 80% of success comes from partnership."
• "Rather get to the start line fit and healthy, than skinny and fast. You need to start the week with some reserves."
• "Don't skimp on equipment. Focus on comfort, and test everything in training."
• "Train on the nutrition you're going to use on race day. If you plan to use gels, use them in training. Also, find out what sponsor products will be at the aid stations and get your stomach used to that."
• "Don't race your partner."
• "Soft pedal until halfway, and then you can decide if you're going to go harder or not."
HANNELE STEYN, 21 FINISHES
