SOAK IN JIUZHAIGOU'S NATURAL BEAUTY The crown jewel of the county is Jiuzhaigou National Park - a living canvas that transforms with the seasons.

I arrive at the tail end of winter, when spring is just peeking through. Long Lake - one of the park's most popular sites - is still frozen, but the first hints of cherry blossoms appear in tiny pink buds on bare branches.

Some of the park's most stunning lakes - such as Five Flower Lake and Mirror Lake - remain unfrozen, shimmering in shades of emerald green and turquoise. The lakes get their colours from mineral deposits like calcium carbonate, and microscopic algae.

Set aside at least half a day to explore the park and wear your most comfortable pair of walking shoes.
