Tributes continue to pour for Enrile

Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin joined yesterday other officials in mourning the passing of chief presidential legal counsel Juan Ponce Enrile, whom he called “an icon of stability during times of tribulations in our history.”

Vice President Sara Duterte, House leaders, Cabinet and police officials also paid tribute,.

Survivors of the martial law regime, however, said they would shed no tears.

In a statement, Bersamin said Enrile’s mantra, “Gusto ko happy ka!” is forever etched in the consciousness of the Filipino people, whom he served until the end with dedication and commitment.

Across six decades of service to the nation, Enrile was steadfast in championing the interests of the Filipino people, the executive secretary said.

Bersamin said Enrile’s stint as Senate president strengthened the chamber, enabling it to overcome the many political challenges of the time.

Enrile died on Thursday after a bout with pneumonia. He was 101 years old.

Vice President Duterte condoled with the family of the former senator.

“Yes, we are sending our condolences to the entire family of former Senate president Juan Ponce Enrile. We remember his contribution to our country, especially in terms of freedom and democracy,” Duterte said in a chance interview in Makati City.

Leaders of the House of Representatives expressed their deep sympathy to the Enrile family.
