Allies Hopeful of Clause Tweak Ahead of JPC on Waqf Bill Final Meet Today

Though Opposition parties have requested to postpone the meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024, the panel is set to begin the two-day meeting to finalize the Bill on Friday.

The Opposition members had written to JPC chairman Jagdambika Pal and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday, requesting that the meetings should be postponed to January 30 and 31. However, the government remained non-responsive to the demand.

Signaling the government's keenness to take up the contentious Bill in the first half of the budget session of Parliament, Pal told media that he will table the report during the upcoming session. As directed by the panel, the members have submitted their amendments to the proposed Bill on Wednesday.
