Protesters gathered in the city centre last Saturday after unrest has broken out in Iran since the death of Mahsa Amini, who was beaten by Iran’s ‘Guidance Patrol’ – the morality police of the country’s Law Enforcement Command.
Anti-government protests in Iran have escalated since they first emerged at Ms Amini’s funeral on September 17, and have turned into the biggest show of opposition to Iran’s authorities for years.
Human rights groups estimate that more than 130 people have been killed by state forces during the protests which have seen police resort to tear gas, clubs and even live ammunition.
The Guidance Patrol was established in 2005. Its duty is arresting people who violate the country’s Islamic dress code.
