High temperatures were felt across most of central and southern England as hot air spread from Spain, Portugal and north Africa.
The Met Office said the mercury had reached 32.7C at Heathrow at 3.30pm yesterday and the Met Office predicted the "hottest Royal Ascot on record" in Berkshire.
Stephen Dixon, a Met Office spokesperson, said that temperatures in the low 30s were "not unprecedented, but it is unusual to see temperatures this high this early in the year", adding that yesterday's temperatures would be the highest since summer 2020.
