The Election Commission on Thursday directed all political parties to stop enrolling or registering voters for post-election beneficiaryoriented schemes under the guise of conducting surveys.

It noted that this amounted to a "bribery" or "corrupt practice" since it had the "potential of quid pro quo for voting and inducements." The EC also directed "no fresh release of funds on welfare schemes and works shall be made".
