Loneliness is often described as “social pain” because it reflects a deeply distressing sense of disconnection from others, whether one is alone or in a crowd. In India, experiencing and expressing loneliness is closely shaped by cultural traditions, societal norms, and deeply rooted values, reflecting the complex interplay between collective expectations and individual experiences. Studies by ICMR highlight rising mental health concerns, including loneliness, with urban residents and the elderly—whose population is projected to reach 194 million by 2031—being particularly vulnerable.

Factors such as migration for better opportunities, rapid urbanization, and technological advancements have contributed to aging populations worldwide, increasing the risk of social isolation and loneliness.
