Know NRI taxes on Indian share buybacks

I live in Dubai and hold 5,000 shares of an Indian company, bought at ₹200 each. The company plans to buy them back at ₹500 per share in May 2025. Will I be liable for buyback tax in India, or will the company handle it?

Before amendments in the Finance (No. 2) Act, 2024, domestic companies paid a 20% buyback tax (plus surcharge and cess) on the distributed income, making it tax-exempt for shareholders, resident or not. With effect from 1 October 2024, Indian companies are no longer liable to pay tax on income amount distributed by it via share buyback. The tax treatment completely changed on account of the changes introduced vide the Finance (No. 2) Act, 2024.
