The Reds were winners at Wembley with a 4-2 shoot-out win over the Championship team.

Erik ten Hag's men had squandered a 3-0 lead in the final 15 minutes and escaped an enormous cup exit when Victor Torp's 120th-minute winner was ruled out for offside.

Rasmus Hojlund scored the decisive spot-kick after Andre Onana saved from Callum O'Hare and Ben Sheaf blazed over. United will take on City in a repeat of last season's final.

After the Reds supporters let their feelings known at full-time with boos, Fernandes provided an honest admission on the current state of the club.

Speaking to ITV Sport, the United captain admitted they have to do better.
