Not a completed task but a living endeavour

AS SOUTH Africa marks Freedom Day tomorrow, we commemorate the historic milestone of the first democratic elections in 1994 a moment when the country turned a decisive page from apartheid to democracy. This day is not only a celebration of political liberation, but also a solemn reminder of the ongoing responsibility to fulfil the promise of freedom for all.

Over three decades later, significant strides have been made. Politically, South Africa has upheld a democratic order, with regular elections and a constitution widely regarded as one of the most progressive in the world. Institutions such as the Constitutional Court and the Office of the Public Protector have, at various times, upheld democratic values and defended the rights of the citizenry.
