'Garbage fee' leaves property tax in limbo

Despite Delhi mayor Raja Iqbal Singh's promise to withdraw the contentious garbage user fee, residents continue to face confusion as the charge remains on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) property tax portal.

NEW DELHI: With the mayoral elections now concluded, the focus in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is likely to shift to the election of zonal wards committees and their chairpersons across Delhi's 12 administrative zones, officials said. The tenure of current zonal wards committees ended on March 31, and MCD will likely notify elections to posts of chairperson and deputy chairperson by next week.

The process will also initiate the formation of the standing committee, which is responsible for clearing infrastructure projects worth more than ₹5 crore. A senior MCD official said the secretariat has reached out to current zonal chairpersons to suggest common dates for conducting the elections. "Once this step is complete and notification is issued, at least 7-10 days will be given to the interested candidates to submit or withdraw their nominations to contest for the chairperson and deputy chairperson posts," he said.
