From fluttery lash extensions to Instagram-worthy eye tattoos and DIY coloured lenses, the hottest beauty trends could be quietly sabotaging your sight

Price of pretty eyes

Eyelash extensions have become a staple in the beauty routines of many, offering the allure of longer, fuller lashes without the daily hassle of mascara. However, beneath their glamorous exterior lies a spectrum of potential eye health concerns.

A study published in Contact Lens and Anterior Eye highlighted that eyelash extensions can lead to ocular surface changes, including corneal epithelial defects and decreased tear film stability. These changes can manifest as dry eyes, irritation, and increased susceptibility to infections.

Moreover, the adhesives used in applying these extensions often contain formaldehyde and other chemicals that can trigger allergic reactions. According to a report in The Sun, improper application by untrained technicians can result in severe complications, such as eyelids being glued together, corneal erosion, and even exposure to cancer-causing substances.

US Dollar – The view after the fall

We started 2025 as US Dollar bears and, thus far, the year has borne out as we expected. At its trough, the US Dollar Index (the 'DXY') fell by over 10 per cent since the start of the year before staging a modest rebound in recent months. This move has been driven by a combination of somewhat-mistaken 'De-dollarisation' fears and the more mundane driver of lower interest rates. Is Dollar weakness now behind us, or is this only the start of a larger move lower? We are of the view that further weakness is yet ahead, albeit after a breather.
