Woman is pulled out alive after nine days by quake rescuers

TV footage showed rescue workers carrying Melike Imamoglu, 42, strapped onto a stretcher, to an ambulance in the southern Turkish city of Kahramanmaras.

The remarkable rescue - nine days after the 7.8-magnitude quake and a subsequent huge tremor hit the region - came as the combined death toll in the two countries climbed above 41,000.

Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to press on with rescue and recovery efforts as hopes that many more survivors will be found faded amid near-freezing winter temperatures.
