BBC is vital to our democratic ecosystem

Every time the BBC gets into trouble, something disturbingly inevitable now seems to happen.

It becomes a unifying moment for critics who relish in calling for its demise and who conveniently ignore the more than a century of good that the BBC has done for a free press in the United Kingdom, and across the world.

The latest furore comes in the wake of the BBC's Panorama splicing together two separate parts from Trump's speech on the day of the Capitol Hill riots. There's no doubt the broadcaster got this wrong. However, we must guard against those who would use errors such as this to tear the BBC down to its roots.
