Desperate asylum seekers told the Daily Express in Istanbul they had been beaten by police in Greece and Bulgaria but will still make another attempt to create a "better life".
Some said people smugglers lied to them about the journey's risks.
Sarhang Ababakr, from Erbil in northern Iraq, said: "The road we are about to take is about 80 per cent death, 20 per cent survival.
"In Greece, I was badly, badly hit. In Bulgaria, when they hit you they mean to kill you.
