Tomasz Oleszak, 14, was attacked in Gateshead on Monday evening and died in hospital. A boy of 14 arrested on suspicion of murder remained in custody last night, as did a girl aged 13 suspected of assisting an offender.

Promising player Tomasz migrated from Poland with his younger brother and mother Kamila Wisniewska – she was told of the attack as she worked a night shift at a local biscuit factory.

She was being comforted yesterday by relatives, friends and specialist Northumbria Police officers.

Tomasz played at Under-15 level for “devastated” Gateshead Cleveland Hall Community Football Club.

Officials said: “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and anyone that knew Tomasz.”
