A PREVIOUSLY private note by Sir Winston Churchill has emerged 68 years on in which he tells of his battle to “get things done in one’s own way” in politics.

The ageing prime minister wrote the memo as he approached his 80th birthday in 1954, less than a year before he stood down.

At the time, he was locked in a fight with his deputy PM, Sir Anthony Eden, over a strategy for withdrawing British troops from Egypt. Churchill was in favour of consulting US president Dwight D Eisenhower but Eden did not want to cooperate with America.
