DESDE 1929, Villa d’Este, expalacio convertido en un gran hotel de las costas del lago Como, ha sido el anfitrión del show de carros más extravagante del mundo. Durante un fin de semana en mayo, los carros más hermosos son precaria y ajustadamente acomodados en las esquinas de los jardines del hotel. Un par de días con la compilación de grandes éxitos automotrices con los mejores motores. Un Mercedes 1936 540k en la entrada; un Ferrari 1956 250 GT Zagato color azul marino debajo de un sicómoro; un Aston Martin 1960 DB4 GT afuera del salón de las calderas.

Distintas lanchas Riva llegan a la orilla del lago; helicópteros ocasionalmente pasan por encima. Los asistentes, con las cámaras de sus celulares en sus manos, usan sus mejores atuendos con resultados increíblemente mezclados. El equipo que atiende a los invitados, con inmaculado saco blanco y corbata negra, no se da abasto con las copas de rosé que deben servir. Incluso el nombre –Concorso d’Eleganza–suena como un aria. Toda la escena es tan italiana que hasta parece irreal; tan pintoresca que tus ojos desearían encontrar algo imperfecto o, al menos, un poco descuidado. Parece el paraíso.
