As day turned to evening in the small Mojave Desert town of Bishop, Calif., the temperature cooled. It was a Friday, and for Karlie Gusé, a 16-year-old junior at Bishop Union High School, and her friends, that meant one thing: watching the Bishop Broncos play football at the school's stadium. But when Karlie called her stepmother, Melissa Gusé, later that night to ask for a ride home, it was clear to Melissa that Karlie had not been at a football game: She seemed high on drugs and in a state of fear and extreme paranoia. "It was so dark," says Melissa, who met up with Karlie on a downtown street, "but she looked pale as a ghost."
