1999'S SULTRY DRAMA CRUEL INTENTIONS REMAINS A FAVOURITE FOR FANS - AND ITS STARS!
A CRUEL CLASSIC

Screenwriter and director Roger Kumble wrote the script for the 1999 movie Cruel Intentions in just 12 days while on a trip to Mexico, after mulling over the idea for a little over a year.

“It was one of those moments when you’re just walking across the street,” he told Cosmopolitan in 2014. “The idea popped into my head to do Dangerous Liaisons set in high school.”

The seductive teen dramedy about spoilt Manhattan rich kids, starring Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Reese Witherspoon, was a hit, grossing $113 million worldwide on a $15.8 million budget. It has become a cult classic that still resonates 25 years on, with a killer soundtrack, memorable moments, and a reboot TV series in the works for Amazon Prime.

“It was daring and edgy, and some people were against the movie and didn’t think it was a good idea,” Gellar recalled to Entertainment Tonight in 2019. “I think we always knew that we were doing something really cool.”

The scandalous story of bored, vicious queen bee Kathryn (Gellar) who bets her stepbrother Sebastian (Phillippe) that he can’t seduce the headmaster’s sweet daughter (Witherspoon) catapulted its stars into the spotlight.
