India's energy storage capabilities mark a decisive leap in 2025
India's Energy Transition on Fast Track
India’s renewable energy and energy-storage ambitions entered a new phase this year, crossing 250 GW of installed renewable capacity and setting a clear path toward the 500 GW target by 2030. The country’s expanding clean-power base has catalysed demand for grid-scale batteries, advanced Energy-Storage Systems (ESS), and electric-mobility solutions that together form the backbone of a low-carbon economy.
At the policy level, the Ministry of Power approved Rs. 5,400 crore in viability gap funding for developing 30 GWh of BESS, expected to attract nearly Rs. 33,000 crore in investments by 2028. This initiative, coupled with the National Green Hydrogen Mission and PLI schemes for cell manufacturing, is transforming India into a key hub for sustainable energy technology. The sector's growth is now backed by multiple ministries working in tandem: the Ministry of Heavy Industries supporting EV manufacturing, the Ministry of Mines driving critical-mineral exploration, and the Ministry of Power ensuring energy-storage integration in grid planning. Collectively, these steps are turning policy ambition into manufacturing reality.
Informa Markets in India organised a high-profile Industry Roundtable in Pune. A prelude to the 3rd edition of The Battery Show India (TBSI) 2025. The roundtable gathered senior figures from OEMs, cell manufacturers, recyclers, and policy think-tanks to examine India’s readiness for large-scale energy-storage deployment. Experts projected the EV battery market to expand from USD 16.77 billion in 2023 to USD 27.70 billion by 2028, powered by localisation and demand across automotive, grid, and commercial-fleet applications.
