Liz Hayes has always been fascinated by crime. Now, with more than four decades of reporting expertise behind her, the TV journalist is shining a spotlight on unsolved mysteries in the new season of Nine's Under Investigation.
“I think we are fascinated by crime - equal measures fascinated and appalled by what people can do," Liz tells Woman's Day.
And it was with horror and intrigue that Liz and her team investigated serial killer John Wayne Glover, known as the Granny Killer. She says delving into Glover's “perverted, deprived mind" was chilling.
"You read through the police paperwork, forensics, and whatnot just to get a sense of what police were dealing with and you come out the other end thinking, 'Wow... why does somebody want to kill the defenceless, vulnerable elderly?'”.
Over a 12-month period more than 30 years ago, Glover terrorised the affluent Sydney suburb of Mosman with a vicious killing spree that claimed the lives of six elderly local women.
“I can't imagine what it was like, living in those suburbs where it was happening. [It] must have been horrific," says Liz.
Between March 1989 and March 1990, Glover murdered Gwen Mitchelhill, 82, Lady Winifred Ashton, 84, Margaret Pahud, 85, Olive Cleveland, 81, Muriel Falconer, 92, and Joan Sinclair, 60. All were badly beaten - some were strangled with their stockings - and in most cases their bodies were rearranged by the killer alongside some of their belongings.
