Metabolism: what is it and can I change it?
Metabolism refers to all the chemical processes which keep us alive and the body functioning properly – digestion, breathing, cell repair, everything. The energy (number of calories) required to do all this is referred to as the ‘basal metabolic rate’.
Once we start moving, a bigger demand is placed on the body, which increases the metabolic rate. We’ve heard people say: ‘I can’t lose weight – I have a slow metabolism’. Well, let’s look at the factors which affect it.
Gender Men have a higher metabolism because they generally have more muscle.
Age Metabolism slows as we get older – it’s part of the aging process.
Size The larger and heavier a person is, the higher their metabolism because the body has to work much harder to maintain a greater mass.
