Why go?
Porto’s most well-known attraction – port wine – is in its name, but there’s more to this north-western Portuguese city than just the ruby tipple. Situated beside the River Douro and just a two-hour flight from the UK, you’re sure to enjoy the bustling medieval centre, lively bars and seafood restaurants. Plus, to the east of the city, the Douro valley teems with vineyards if you want to extend your stay beyond 48 hours.
What to see
Draped along the banks of the river Douro, Porto is a romantic mix of tumbling cobbled streets, fine baroque churches and terracotta-tiled roofs. As one of Europe’s oldest cities, Porto has a fascinating past, which can be seen in its resplendent cathedral and the historic Ribeira district.
