Pre-season predictions in Turkey involve allocating top-three finishes to the big three (Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray) and fourth place to one of the strong Anatolian clubs (Trabzonspor or Bursaspor). Medipol Basaksehir defied expectations by finishing fourth in 2015 and 2016 but still no one expected to see them pose a serious title challenge at the beginning of 2016-17. We were all proven wrong.
The club were founded in 1990 as Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB). They reached the Turkish Super League in 2007 and got to the cup final four years later. Their relegation in 2013 was a surprise but immediate promotion back to the top tier brought about a few changes. The team were rechristened Istanbul Basaksehir and moved to Fatih Terim Stadium on the city’s outskirts.
