D-backs area scout enjoys ‘storybook’ first year
Dan Ramsay didn’t take the normal path to his current role as the Diamondbacks’ area scout in the Pacific Northwest. He went from coaching at Whitworth University in Spokane, Wash., to landing a job as a coach in the Twins’ minor league system almost on a whim thanks to a connection with friend and current Giants bench coach Kainoa Correa.
After a year with the Twins, he decided to take a job closer to home to be around his family more often, instead of 3,000 miles away in Fort Myers, Fla. After a lengthy interview process, Ramsay started his new role as an amateur scout by immediately heading to the Area Code Games, one of the jewels of the high school showcase circuit, held in California.
There, he got a look at a strong, athletic outfielder named Corbin Carroll, a product of Seattle’s Lakeside High who quickly stuck out from the other players in the field. Now, Carroll is the No. 1 prospect in Arizona’s system.

Q: Once you took the job with Diamondbacks, how quickly did you get your feet on the ground, and how quickly after that did you latch onto Corbin Carroll?
