Claire Cashmore was propelled into the nation’s consciousness back in 2012 when she was chosen as one of the faces of Channel 4’s Meet the Superhumans campaign, speaking candidly about her disability (she was born without a left forearm). Competing as a para-swimmer since her first Games in Athens, she’s collected a total of eight medals in the pool, including gold in the 4 x 100m medley relay in Rio. Swapping to paratri in 2017, the 33-year-old Loughborough-based athlete is now one of her category’s top contenders, and ends 2021 as a Paralympic paratri bronze medallist and the European and world PTS5 champion. If that wasn’t enough, she also released a children’s book. Over to Claire…
Claire Cashmore: I was a Paralympic swimmer and went to four Paralympic Games. My first was at the age of 16 in Athens in 2004, and then Beijing, London and Rio. I had a big break after Rio, as I needed time to get away from the sport and work out what I wanted to do with my life, and which direction I wanted to go in.
Qualifying for my fifth Paralympic Games in paratriathlon was just fantastic. It’s been a pretty whirlwind journey. A massive step outside of my comfort zone and I’ve learnt a hell of a lot about myself. But it’s such a great sport and an amazing community to be a part of.
