Surgeon Commander Stuart Dickson, who works at Derriford Hospital, has spoken about the pressures the hospital is facing amid the Omicron wave of the pandemic.

He said many of those who were unvaccinated were now showing a “sense of regret” about their earlier decision.

Surg Cdr Dickson has urged the public to take up the offer of vaccinations to help others by easing the strain on the NHS.

He said: “It is not uncommon for unvaccinated patients to develop a sense of regret for the decisions they have made in the past not to be vaccinated.

“Recovery can be prolonged, going well beyond their time in hospital, with rehabilitation over a number of months. Some patients are only now returning to normal activities nearly two years later.”

He added that, at times, 80% of Derriford Hospital’s coronavirus patients were unvaccinated.
