RESIDENTS in Stoke have welcomed a decision by planners to turn down plans to build a block of apartments in a city conservation area.
The development on land in Fitzroy Road in Stoke prompted dozens of objections from local residents and local councillors, and would have seen seven new homes built on the site.
City council planning officers, under delegated powers, rejected the application, on the grounds it would result in harm to the character and appearance of the conservation area and will lead to the removal of trees and woodland.
Other reasons for refusal included its failure to provide a biodiversity net gain, the harm caused to highway safety and that it provides inadequate parking provision, while the units will also not provide a good standard of accommodation.
