ARGYLE WILL MISS HIS PRESENCE BUT MIDFIELDER CAN SHINE ON WORLD STAGE

Camara told to go and enjoy AFCON experience

STEVEN Schumacher is hoping Plymouth Argyle midfielder Panutche Camara gets a chance to shine for Guinea-Bissau at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Camara has been called up for the tournament in Cameroon, which starts on January 9, and will miss a number of games for the Pilgrims, starting with the FA Cup third round tie at Birmingham City on Saturday.

The 24-year-old has yet to make his debut for Guinea-Bissau, who are 106th in the FIFA World rankings, but has been in excellent form for Argyle.

Schumacher said: "It's a brilliant opportunity for Pan and it's an experience that I hope he goes and enjoys, and makes the most out of it.

"To represent your country is an honour but to do it on a world stage in such a big tournament, the Africa Cup of Nations, I hope he has a really good time.

"It's going to be a big miss to us, obviously, because he's a big player for us but it will give other people an opportunity in the team to stake their claim.

"So we wish him well and we challenge everybody else now to go and make that spot your own."

Camara would have missed Argyle's home games against Portsmouth last Wednesday and AFC Wimbledon on New year's Day had they not been postponed due to a Covid outbreak at the club.

That is because he left immediately after the 2-0 victory over Cheltenham Town on Boxing Day to travel to Guinea-Bissau, via Portugal.

Guinea-Bissau have been drawn in Group D at the 33rd edition of the Africa Cup of Nations with seventimes winners Egypt, whose squad includes Liverpool star Mo Salah.
