Andy Murray said he was “gutted for tennis” after the reigning Wimbledon and Australian Open women’s champion delivered the bombshell news in an interview with her friend and former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua via social media channels.
“Today is difficult and filled with emotion for me as I announce my retirement from tennis,” Barty wrote in a post on Instagram, alongside a video of the interview. “ I am so thankful for everything this sport has given me and leave feeling proud and fulfilled. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, I’ll always be grateful for the lifelong memories that we created together.”
Barty departs at her peak, having held the world No 1 position since winning the 2019 French Open. Yesterday the Australian held back tears as she broke the news. “I’ll be retiring from tennis. That’s the first time I’ve said it out loud, and it’s hard to say,” Barty said. “But I am so happy, and I’m so ready, and I just know at the moment in my heart [that] for me as a person, this is right.”
