Failing to stop filthy abuse is in itself abuse

The lad probably thought he’d done well – scoring twice as West Brom thumped Chelsea last week. Then he switched on his phone and scrolled through a torrent of insults.

Liverpool’s Trent AlexanderArnold and Naby Keita suffered the same treatment in midweek following the defeat by Real Madrid. Three players at Swansea City went through a similar ordeal.

Leaving aside the more general point about educating the type of people who think it is OK to post this filth for general consumption, it needs to be pointed out this wouldn’t be tolerated on the street. Not a street I’ve ever walked down anyway.

One out-of-place remark, spoken to someone’s face, would have sparked a brawl inside 10 seconds on a crowded thoroughfare in pretty much any city in this country. Seventy would have sparked a riot.
