GARDAI'S 999 CALL FAILURE

AN independent report into the cancellation of thousands of 999 calls by gardai has found information given by callers was not properly recorded.

The new probe into the issue of cancelled emergency calls also revealed that officers were frequently sent to wrong locations.

The Policing Authority interim review discovered quality control, policies relating to the management of people and supervision were either not followed, or were inadequate.

The report was compiled by former Chief Inspector of Police Scotland Derek Penman and the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, who was quizzed about the report yesterday afternoon.

The controversy erupted when it emerged more than 200,000 emergency calls were cancelled in an improper manner between 2019 and 2020.

A significant 3,000 of the calls were domestic violence-related.
