Anaemia among children and adults has worsened with more than half of women and children in India reported to be anaemic, according to the fifth National Family Health Survey 2019-21 of 14 states and Union Territories released on Wednesday.
Among children aged six months to five years, more than 67 per cent were found to be anaemic compared to 58.6 per cent in the last survey conducted in 2015-16. More women and men in the 15 to 49 age group were found anaemic compared to the last survey. Cases of anaemia were much higher among women (57 per cent) as against men (25 per cent) in the 15-49 age band.
"Anaemia among children and women continues to be a cause of concern...in spite of substantial increase in the composition of iron folic acid tablets by pregnant women for 180 days or more," the health ministry said.
