With her children all grown up and a landmark birthday on the horizon, Kathy Lette unleashes a now-or-never attitude to life
For women, life is in two acts – the trick, I believe, is surviving the interval. The menopause intermission I found to be demoralising, like being a hormonal teenager all over again, only this time with wrinkles instead of pimples. Not to mention fiendishly hot – I was having my own weather!
But now that I am through that fraught phase, I’m suddenly reassessing everything. A now-or-never feeling has taken hold of me. Not only have my husband and I separated on amicable terms after a 28-year marriage, but I’ve also embarked on a one-woman show. Plus, I’ve decided to take a gap year and go travelling (gap years are so wasted on the young, don’t you think?). I can’t stop thinking about all the wonders of the world I’ve never glimpsed: the Great Wall of China, the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu in Peru, Chris Hemsworth naked...
My brain is jumping from one missed opportunity to another. I’ve never learnt a musical instrument. Well, not properly – Grade 1 glockenspiel doesn’t really count. I’ve also never skydived.
