The Fred Hollows Foundation works toward a world where no person is unnecessarily blind.
The sight of a blind beggar is so common in the Philippines that you probably wouldn’t be surprised to hear there are over two million Filipinos suffering from visual impairment. But what comes as a bigger shock is that four out of five of those who are blind didn’t have to be. In fact, millions of Filipinos are vision-impaired simply because they live in poverty and don’t have access to proper eye care. This is why the Fred Hollows Foundation is on an unwavering mission to make sure everyone—whether rich or poor—has access to high-quality, affordable eye health.
A VISION MISSION
Founded in Australia in 1992 by ophthalmologist Fred Hollows, the Fred Hollows Foundation now works in more than 25 countries all over the world, restoring sight to over 2.5 million people. The foundation began its work in the Philippines in March 2014 (it celebrates its fifth year this month!) with the Community Eye Health Program in Tarlac, a program that is being replicated in many provinces around the country.
