Alejandro Marmo’s life changed the moment he met a particular cardinal— who went on to become the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church.
“Once upon a time, there was an Argentinian . . .” is how Alejandro Marmo’s story should start, since it’s just like a fairytale. Alejandro was born in Buenos Aires in 1971 to an Italian father and a Greek mother. All was well in Alejandro’s life, until 2001 when everything good came crashing down along with the Argentine economic crisis. Desperate and feeling hopeless with his situation, the young man lost his way and turned to vices. That was when common friends intervened and connected him with a kindred soul—Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the Archbishop of Buenos Aires. “Thanks to that meeting, art saved my life, it gave me the imagination to get out of the situation in which I was in,” says Alejandro. Who would have thought that the cardinal who extended his help to the troubled young man would go on to become the Santo Papa, our beloved Pope Francis?
