A week in the life of Corona High School
Kent Life|May 2020
Just like you, the government-mandated closure of schools has thrust us into a whole new world of educating our children at home. Here’s how we survived week one

A week in the life of Corona High School

Our sons, Jonathan and Robin, are in Year 6 and Year 8 respectively, so while they are not yet facing GCSEs or A-levels, they do still need to at least try and keep up with their education. Welcome to Corona High School!

There are two pupils on the roll. Two adults working jointly as head teacher/IT technician/ counsellor/catering manager/ sports coach/cheerleader/ caretaker. The rules are simple.

We’re all in this together. We try to do our best. We follow their school timetables to structure our days. And we never, ever turn up for class in our pyjamas. Well, not very often...

So, for an exclusive insight into the first week of our brand-new educational institution, read on.

MONDAY

A new challenge! No annoying school run to do! Dad has relinquished control over his precious gaming laptop, while Mum’s cranky old machine has been dusted off and put on charge.

There is paper in the printer, the pencils have been sharpened and we’re raring to go. In fact, both boys are sitting at the table 20 minutes before official kick-off time, having enjoyed a tasty, nutritious cooked breakfast.

Robin’s ‘other’ school has set him up on a conference-calling system that enables his teachers to talk to him, send assignments and guide lessons remotely. Jonathan’s school is emailing work the night before. Off we go!

The novelty factor is high. So is the energy. Both boys work well. The voices of Robin’s teacher and classmates waft out of his laptop speakers as the day progresses. The boys break for lunch and do star jumps in the garden. When 4pm comes around we celebrate with chocolate biscuits. We can do this.
