IT WAS TOUGH, BUT SHE SURVIVED
Vaishnavi Indran Pillai, affectionately known as Navi, is a cheerful and bubbly young woman. Upon meeting her, her radiant smile and jovial laughter seem to have an effortless effervescence that makes everyone want to be around her. Like a ray of hopeful sunshine, it’s hard to connect her to the hardships she’s been through.
Diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2013, Navi was just 22, a young university graduate who was looking forward to getting her dream job. She felt lost and confused as she didn’t even know how severe the illness could be and had no idea what lay ahead of her. All she wanted to do was to get treated as fast as she could so she could live a regular life like her peers.
But treatment is never an easy process. She was faced with a slew of therapies – lumpectomy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, Herceptin, hormone therapy – and then there was also the rush confusing emotions she had to cope with. Her plans for her future, her dreams and everything she had wanted to achieve in her youth were held back; she didn’t have a choice. Through all the painful treatments, Navi started to learn more about cancer and how frightening the disease is.
