Almost All of Us Would Have Heard of Someone or Another Who Has Given Up All Their Material Possessions Just to Be One With Nature. Vasenta Selvanayagam Reveals the Story of Christine Das, a Contemporary Nature Artist Who Did Just That in Order to Give Back to Nature.

For The Love Of Elephants

Born and bred in Penang, Christine Das, 51, possesses a background in graphic designing and has gone through a fair chance to explore her opportunities as a graphic designer in publications and multimedia, as an illustrator, 2D animator and even an in-house hotel artist. Believe it or not, this lady was the one who came up with the beautiful artwork of Anna and the King.. After doing this for 18 years and having a hectic nine-to-five schedule for 19 years, she began to question her purpose and meaning of life, just like most artists would.

FEMALE: What made you make that decision to switch to become a full-time contemporary artist?

Christine Das: “To be honest, after quitting my job, I started to paint and realised that I really liked doing that. What made me decide to do it for a better cause was when I read the news of the death of 13 pygmy elephants in Tawau, Sabah. The one picture that really broke my heart was the picture of Little Joe and his mum. Honestly, I’ve never felt that down in life before.”

F: How did you link the dots between elephants and painting at that time?
