¿FIESTA DE LA HUMANIDAD?
La historia del ser humano puede definirse como una eterna sucesión de conflictos. De acuerdo con los historiadores William y Ariel Durant en Lessons of History (1968), en los 3,421 años que precedieron a la publicación de ese libro, la humanidad había experimentado solo 268 en paz. Es decir, decidimos resolver nuestras diferencias de forma violenta en nueve de cada 10 años comprendidos en ese lapso, y las cosas no han cambiado mucho desde entonces.
Con esto en mente, parece un milagro que desde 1896 hayamos sido capaces de organizar 28 ediciones de un evento que reúne a representantes de prácticamente todos los países de la tierra. Durante las tres semanas que dura la competencia, el mundo hace una pausa en nombre de los valores olímpicos: excelencia, amistad y respeto. Si alguna vez nos visitan seres de otro planeta y preguntan por lo mejor de la humanidad, habría que hablarles sobre el espíritu de los Juegos.
Previo a la aparición del covid-19, solo dos crisis habían forzado al Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) a cancelar o posponer esta justa: la Primera y Segunda Guerras Mundiales. En ambos casos, pasado el trance, el ciclo olímpico –eventualmente– retomó su curso y de nuevo se abrió el mayor escaparate del deporte mundial. Pero el historial de resiliencia de los Juegos no implica que este año, una vez superado el punto más álgido de la crisis sanitaria, estos vayan a volver al business as usual. Y, tomando en cuenta cómo han evolucionado en las últimas décadas, quizá eso sea lo mejor.
