El 25 de febrero de 2022, solo horas después de que Rusia invadiera Ucrania, el paso fronterizo de Medyka, Polonia, recibe la primera oleada de ucranianos que escapaban de la guerra. Para ese momento, todavía no soy consciente de lo que veo, pero sé que estoy ante el mayor éxodo de población en Europa desde la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Cada día llegaba más gente. Durante las siguientes semanas, casi cuatro de los ocho millones de personas que abandonaban Ucrania lo hacían por este paso fronterizo.
Los ucranianos varones en edad de servir en el ejército tienen prohibido salir del país. Es un éxodo de mujeres, niños y ancianos. Madres con hijos pequeños. Observo que llevan maletas pequeñas hechas precipitadamente. No es un viaje previsto. La invasión les ha sorprendido de madrugada y sin tiempo para preparar un desplazamiento traumático y lleno de incertidumbres. Ni siquiera saben a dónde van. Atrás dejan a su familia, esposos y padres. Llama la atención cómo muchos niños llevan sus muñecos de peluche. Los medios titulan: El éxodo de los peluches. A mí me parece el éxodo del horror. Y aún no he visto nada.
Me acerco a estas mujeres para saber qué ocurre en Ucrania y cómo ha sido el viaje. Llegan exhaustas y atemorizadas. Algunas rompen a llorar a los pocos momentos de iniciar el relato. Otras se limitan a mirarme, encogerse de hombros y continuar hacia los puestos donde reciben comida caliente y ropa de abrigo. No es necesario que me contesten. Comprendo que llegan del infierno y el viaje ha sido terrible.
